Literary Responses to the Woman Question: Exploring Women’s Writing in the Greek Magazine Elliniki Epitheorisis
Abstract
This study examines the portrayal of women’s social roles in female-authored literary contributions within Elliniki Epitheorisis (Athens, 1907–1941, 1944, 1946), a general-interest magazine published and directed by Eugenia Zografou. This publication offers an interesting case study of women’s literary responses to the Woman Question, distinguished for its long duration and diverse thematic scope. It is also notable for its consistent focus on women’s rights, and creativity, which was largely due to female direction. Drawing from primary sources, this analysis highlights the magazine’s role in portraying women’s experiences amid social changes and evolving gender norms in the early twentieth century. Thus, it provides a representative example of how moderate feminist strategy promoted and supported women’s rights claims, while also shedding light on the historical and social dimensions of literary production and reception.
